the room was very small and at the end of many stairs and corridors, in an old hotel that was adjunct to a better one.

the relationship between the central and it's parent hotel needs some work. it feels like the poor relation rather than the little brother mentioned on website.

The Central is an annex at rear of the more expensive Euler . Rooms comfortable and quiet and one has the amenities of the Euler (breakfast room ,etc).V centrally located and good value .

The electronic guides of the city not recommended but we enjoyed walks and found out I think just as much with small paper guide . The free(ticket from hotel) pub transport makes everything v easy . Particularly recommended (for art lovers) the Kunstmuseum and the Beyeler Collection .

The room was shabby with skirting boards coming away from the wall (photographed), the shower/toilet was tiny and actually some sort of large cabinet built into the corner of the room, the staff (with the exception of just one receptionist and the tiny lady who cleaned my room) were surly, somewhat moody, and generally less than welcoming (unusual for the Swiss), the
catering arrangements were bizarre (they were in another hotel entirely and not even the Euller) the staff of which, for the most part, had no idea they were to feed me - and, very strange for what was a 4* hotel, who had a notice at each table announcing they had no cooking facilities whatsoever (again photographed just to prove it to my colleagues and friends). The room rate (as found on paperwork in my room and photographed) was 350 Swiss francs, yet I was charged £310 sterling! This was also the noisiest hotel I have ever stayed in in that the (rather charming) wood block floors creaked so alarmingly that I seemed able to hear every step taken by other visitors throughout the building at all hours(and, one presumes, they had the misfortune to hear my every move). Otherwise not too bad - but I will be complaining!

1) Fasnacht (the local carnival) will more than make up for all of the above (but let's face it, that is an event that could almost make up for a bereavement).
2) Take ear plugs to deal with the flooring problem (yes, it really is that serious).
3) Enjoy the superb (but cold) breakfasts in the Metropol. Oh, and, once they know what is going on, the staff there are so very much friendlier and, with the exceptions noted above, far more helpful.

When I arrived at the Hotel the Receptionist was on a call which took over 10 minutes. She could have put this on hold and given me my room key in 2 minutes flat.

Very tiny room, for a not so tiny price.
The personal however have been extremely helpful and competent.
Location is convenient (in front of the railway station, with most tram lines and several bus lines stoping there).
